About

"Feminism is the radical notion that women are people."
- Marie Shear

Women's Initiative Edmonton is a City of Edmonton initiative, supported and endorsed by City Council, that fosters and promotes equality, opportunity, access to services, justice and inclusion for women in our city. It is among the first of its kind in Canada, and we're proud to be ensuring that the unique perspectives of women and girls are included in the conversations that shape our city.

We actively advocate on behalf of Edmonton women in City decision-making and policy development, and we are a central community hub for culture-changing conversations at the municipal level.

It must be stated up front that we do not exist to take anything away from men in our city. Our purpose is to empower women, to work toward women's social, political and economic equality in our city, and to add a gender lens to decision making (a lens that has been historically and is currently under-represented). It is a false dichotomy to suggest that by raising women up, we must lower men. Our solution is additive and inclusive, not subtractive and exclusive.

Ultimately this equity makes our city stronger and improves the health and well-being of all Edmontonians.
